On July 29, 2008, I wrote about the risk factors that predispose parents to kidnap their children. See Parental kidnapping | Risk Factors.
Today, the New York Daily News reported that, in fact, Clark Rockefeller had talked last Christmas to friends about kidnapping his daughter Reigh. According to this report, Rockefeller was "so crushed when his ex-wife moved overseas with his beloved 7-year-old daughter that he told pals last Christmas, 'I may have to kidnap her.' "
Rockefeller’s friend, William Quigley, told the Daily News:
"He felt like he had fought this thing with every ounce of energy he had. He was pushed to the edge. He said, 'I don't know what I'm going to do. I may have to kidnap her. I love her so much.' " You may read the Daily News Depressed during holidays, Clark Rockefeller spoke of kidnapping here.
It begins to appear that many of Rockefeller’s comments during the kidnapping—such as those indicating that he planned to escape on a 72-foot yacht named Serenity—were merely a ruse, calculated to misdirect law enforcement.
There’s no question that this is one very shrewd and calculating man. Finding him and finding 7-year old Reigh will be a challenge.
Excellent coverage of this case is provided by the London-based Daily Mail, which reported on August 1, 2008 that the child's mother had paid Clark Rockefeller substantial sums (millions) to give up his custody battle and to stay out of her and Reigh's life.
