The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has released new guidelines for vaccinating females aged 9-26 with the human papillomavirus vaccine.
The guidelines, published in MMWR, recommend vaccinating girls aged 11-12. The vaccine can be given to girls at the age of 9 and older. The guidelines recommend vaccination or those aged 13-26 who did not get the vaccine earlier.
Ideally, the vaccine should be administered before sexual exposure to HPV. Nevertheless, it is still recommended for females who already have a history of genital warts.
The vaccine is not licensed for use in males, although studies investigating whether the vaccination is effective in males are on-going. MMWR article
