Internet coverage of a Family Court hearing in Durham, North Carolina has garnered only 17,000 views on YouTube. (How did this courtroom video get posted to YouTube?) Those views, in my opinion, are hardly sufficient. Hopefully, the North Carolina Judicial Tenure Commission will view the video.
What should have been an ordinary decision handed down by the judge in a custody case turned into something that felt very personal to one of the litigants. According to WNCN, a local TV Channel:
“I could care less about the two of you,” District Court Judge James Hill is heard on camera saying, emphasizing the case was about the former couple's 3-year-old son. Hill said the boy did not need to see “two adults acting like idiots. I said the word ‘idiots.'” Hill went on to say, “What the two of you have done to that little boy is unconscionable.” He said the parents were “the ones who crawled into bed and had sex and made that baby. He didn't ask to be born.” The judge's performance is seen here:
The mother was locked up in the Durham County Jail [the "Durham County Bed & Breakfast" according to the judge--who repeated that misnomer twice before telling officers in the courtroom to arrest the mother. for an outburst in court said she doesn't regret speaking out to the judge. The mother, who lives in Winston-Salem, spent 30 days in jail after yelling and fighting deputies at the end of a two-and-a-half day custody and child support hearing in Durham on Aug. 7.
ABC News Channel 7 (Chicago) covered the incident here.
WNCN's interview with the mother after her release from jail may be seen here on the WNCN website at this link.
