It's time for a "good news" story. Imagine losing control of your car, going off a steep embankment. At age 67, you cannot climb up--especially not with a broken arm, dislocated shoulder, 3 rib fractures and a broken back. You end up eating bugs and leaves, drinking water from a nearby creek. Imagine this. You find a car near you with a dead man inside. This sounds like a real horror movie. Six days later, you are rescued. Amazingly, you are rescued by your own adult children!
This actually occurred recently in California, north of Los Angeles.
What an amazing story! Law enforcement could tell David Lavau's children nothing more than that he had used his cell phone and bankcard somewhere between his home and Ventura County. No search and rescue teams were sent out. So his kids came to the rescue. Six days after his disappearance, they found him in a wilderness area, after driving over a mountainous road and stopping by every ravine to call out his name. Finally, they heard his voice. "Help! Help!"
Every parent should be such a loving parent that his / her loving children would stop everything to search and search. What had David Lavau written on his car? (OK, your car would be dirty too if it had fallen down a ravine.) "I love my kids. Dead man was not my fault. Love, Dad."
The full story is here in the NY Times: By the Associated Press, One Ravine, Two Accidents; One Driver Is Rescued, New York Times, October 1, 2011. [Last accessed October 3, 2011]
Lavau's children were interviewed on the Today Show.
